How Much did that Video Cost? By Derrick Peachey, Filmmaker
“How much does a video cost?” is the most common question we get. So, approved we’ve asked video creators to identify a video they like & let us know what they thought it would cost to produce. The only catch: IT’S NOT THEIR VIDEO (so all posts are merely an estimate by each video creator on what they thought a similar video might cost). Enjoy the series!
So, how much did that video cost?
As a director, editor, DOP, I love to find gems like this. If you love great filmmaking then you need to check out Variable.
This video stood out to me because it creates this energetic, emotional and euphoric feeling every time I watch it. Basically, this is exactly what I am going for every time I am part of a project/need to create a commercial. This feeling is created by combining some really talented individuals that work great as a team.
The most important part of this type of commercial to me is the audio. The DP, editing, grading, directing – it’s all top notch, but the audio really took it to the next level for me. Obviously you need to have great imagery, editing and directing – but sound can be the one thing that destroys or elevates an ad. They (Variable) nailed it. It’s an effective ad because it hits you deep inside – it has a draw to it and can relate to other individuals who are in a similar situation, or to those who see boxing as a way of release or strength.
Lighting looks mostly natural – maybe a few sce.
Overall, I’d estimate this video cost between 25k-50k:
Assistant Director and AC: $4k
Sound: I believe this was an original piece – sounds very difficult. I’d guess $6k-10K
Camera: Alexa or Phantom. I’ll go with Phantom at $1.5k-2.5k per day
Talent: Wilder probably was not cheap. I’d say $5k-$10k
All in all, a great ad worth every penny in my opinion. I have not seen too many videos produced as well as this one. It is something I am striving everyday to achieve and I am always looking to hire or be a part of a team with personnel like variable who can bring the videos to life.
